Abstract:
Despite narcissism’s prevalence and significance in organizational settings, conceptual and methodological challenges have limited our understanding of its complex and often contradictory effects. My research draws on meta-analytic techniques, longitudinal field studies, and multi-level team research to address several fundamental questions, including: “Are young people more narcissistic than they used to be?”, “Are there systematic gender differences in narcissism?”, “How does narcissism predict leadership outcomes?”, and “How does narcissism at the team level influence coordination processes and performance outcomes?”. Spanning over a decade of work, this research challenges several common assumptions about narcissism within and outside of organizational life. I conclude by considering future directions for organizational narcissism research with an emphasis on measurement considerations and developing organizational strategies for addressing narcissistic behaviors.
