New Insights into Alleviating Global Poverty and Inequality

Abstract: The present symposium will explore how charities, policy makers, organizations, and educational systems can work together to help alleviate poverty and inequality. First, Kassirer et al. explore how food insecure individuals respond to being offered food vs. money to purchase food. Second, Carriaga et al. explore the behavioral consequences of financial shocks. Next, Whillans et al. test an intervention to alleviate inequality in the amount of time stress and burnout men and women experience in the workplace. Finally, Hecht et al. explore interventions at the policy implementer level (high school teachers) to help alleviate systemic inequality of educational outcomes. All in all, the present symposium aims to foster discussion of theory, future research, and potential societal interventions on poverty and inequality, with the goal of aiding the alleviation of both.
