Love and labor: The hidden negotiations of domestic life.

Abstract: Since 1950, women’s share of the labor force has increased from 29.6% to 46.8%. However, despite women breaking barriers and gaining considerable ground in the workforce, they are still constrained by traditional gender roles at home. In this research, we focus on how traditional gender roles and beliefs about gender roles affect women’s intrahousehold negotiations, including the division of household labor and the career the couple prioritizes. To create equitable outcomes and encourage talent in the workforce, we conduct a novel examination of intra-household negotiations. We explore both qualitative data and pilot negotiation data to better understand women’s constraints and possible interventions.
