AI and Society: Challenges to Face and Opportunities to Embrace
Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic decision-making (ADM) are proliferating in society. Yet despite algorithmic systems’ growing prominence, many open questions remain about AI and one of the most revolutionary technologies in recent history: large language models (LLMs). An insufficient understanding of AI and LLMs has already produced serious consequences, including documented cases of unintentional discrimination in high-stakes situations. These, in turn, have generated conflict over how to best integrate algorithms and AI in society. This symposium explores the controversies engendered by the rapid innovation and adoption of AI and presents potential solutions to these controversies. The first two presentations examine how individuals perceive algorithms being deployed in high-stakes settings and how these perceptions influence downstream outcomes. The remaining two presentations highlight how AI opens new doors for both researchers and practitioners, with applications ranging from improving behavioral outcomes to advancing research capabilities.
