Returning to Civil Discourse: A Qualitative Analysis of Depolarization Efforts in Higher Education

Abstract: Amid rising political polarization in America, this study investigates the role of college campuses in fostering political depolarization and civic dialogue. Conducting interviews on two levels (both with depolarization/peacebuilding experts and student depolarization activists), we identify strategies that support effective depolarization efforts and explore how student-led initiatives can drive broader societal change. Through inductive thematic coding, the research aims to develop a scalable framework for integrating depolarization into campus conflict management structures. The present study seeks to inform the development of comprehensive, actionable strategies that can be implemented at institutions nationwide to promote civil discourse and mutual understanding on college campuses. Finally, we explore how college campuses may be used to build momentum for a broader national depolarization social movement.
