How to Write a Multi-Party Integrative Negotiation Simulation
Abstract: Negotiation simulations are integral to negotiation pedagogy, yet few resources address the challenges of writing complex, multi-party, integrative simulations. This workshop bridges this gap by providing a hands-on, interactive experience focused on the design process, using the FunBar simulation as a case study. FunBar is a three-party negotiation simulation set in a start-up mobile gaming company, where three team leads must prioritize features, allocate R&D resources, and establish sustainable policies to address organizational conflict. Rather than concentrating on the simulation’s content, the workshop emphasizes the process of crafting such cases, exploring challenges like writing for unfamiliar industries, tackling complex dynamics, and engaging key contributors new to negotiation teaching. Participants will step into the role of a simulation writer, navigating real-world hurdles and strategizing the next steps. Through facilitated discussion, the workshop empowers novice simulation writers, promotes inclusivity in simulation design, and fosters collaboration among educators. This workshop welcomes negotiation professionals and educators of all experience levels, offering a supportive space to demystify the simulation-writing process and enhance the collective quality of negotiation teaching tools. Addressing an underexplored area of pedagogy, it provides participants with opportunities to elevate their teaching and enrich the field of negotiation education.
