Abstract: Despite societal progress toward equality, gender gaps in career trajectories persist. Emerging evidence points to the role of gendered expectations about the tasks men and women complete at work, such as mentoring low-performing junior employees. Using a multi-method approach combining field and experimental data, we provide evidence suggesting female managers are more likely to be mentoring low-performing junior employees (Study 1) but rule out that this effect is driven by women being more likely to volunteer for this task (Study 2).
