Abstract: Why do people want to be loyal? In this research, we differentiate two loyalty motives – a moral motive for loyalty where loyal behavior is motivated by the moral values associated with loyalty, and a strategic motive for loyalty where loyal behavior is motivated by the instrumental benefits that loyalty can bring about. Studies 1a-1c develop a loyalty motive scale and test its psychometric properties. Studies 2-3 uncover contextual factors influencing individuals’ loyalty motives and find that leader dominance orientation is an important antecedent of subordinate strategic motive for loyalty.
