Abstract: In conflict and crisis leaders play a major role and can make the difference between the success or failure in overcoming the crisis and reaching an agreed upon solution to conflict. The papers included in this symposium study the role of leaders’ attributes and actions – ranging from gender identity and gender stereotypic traits and communication patterns to teaching the language of the other side in conflict in an attempt to build bridges and bring social change – in leaders’ success to elicit public support in their society own as well as in other countries and societies and in encouraging transformative processes. The role of leaders in conflicts and crises is increasingly crucial in the global arena of multiple and constantly erupting or re-erupting ethnonational conflicts, the increase of societies in crisis as well as the rapidly changing dynamics of cross-countries coalitions and rivalries. In this context, our panel aims to identify attributes and actions of leaders and leadership that enhance their ability to lead their country out of crisis, mobilize support, and promote the resolution of crisis and conflict.
