The Characteristics and Identities That Shape Perceptions of Diversity Expertise

We show that personal experiences of marginalization are weighed as heavily as professional experience in hiring for diversity-related roles. Adopting an intersectional approach, we find these hiring decisions are based more on candidate race than other demographic categories like gender, elucidating that diversity expertise is specifically associated with racial marginalization.
