A Cognitive Balance Approach to Understanding Intergroup Attitudes in Post-Brexit Northern Ireland
Abstract: Applying cognitive balance theory interpersonal relations, we found that intergroup bias was lower when the groups of Irish and British people in Northern Ireland were perceived as more (vs. less) compatible. Thus, emphasizing commonalities between groups—an act that increases their perceived compatibility—could reduce intergroup bias.
