Modeling Avoidance of Interpersonal Conflicts: Predictors and Moderators

Abstract: This extended abstract expands on recently-published work investigating avoidance as an active response to conflict (rather than a mere absence of response). In this project, the authors begin the process of formally modeling the decision to either avoid or engage in conflict. A model of conflict response is presented and tested. Data collection will take place in late February and will include both student and non-student samples, with an intended final sample of approximately n=500. The model investigates participants’ perceptions of the costs and benefits of conflict engagement and avoidance, as well as potentially moderation effects of argument stakes and individual difference variables.
