Do you trust me? How to Signal (Un)Trustworthiness

Abstract: Trust plays a crucial role in human interactions across virtually every context. What factors determine whether people decide to trust a given target or not? In this symposium, we will present research on some of the latest findings that illuminate when and why people choose to trust others. In particular, the four presentations will each present research on certain behaviors or characteristics of a potential trustee that lead to increased or decreased trust. The first talk will explore how self-awareness can decrease trust; the second will explore how precommitment can increase trust; the third will explore how negotiating on behalf of a group can decrease trust; and the third will explore how linguistic cues affect trust. Taken together, these talks will highlight important antecedents to trust—with implications for a wide variety of interpersonal interactions and domains—and will allow for a discussion of future directions in trust research.
