Mediation in fragile states: The ECOWAS intervention in Mali
Preventive diplomacy in fragile states through the use of mediation is a recurring practice in the multi-dimensional discipline of international conflict management. Yet, there is still little understanding on the theoretical and practical underpinnings of this emerging practice. This paper presents mediation in an intra-state territorial conflict, focusing on the recent crisis in Mali and the efforts by the regional organization ECOWAS to manage the crisis, including the use of virtual tools, release of kidnapped personnel and the performative aspects of a multiplicity of mediation actors. This paper elaborates on the intricacies of international mediation. It is directed to scholars, practitioners, and students in the field of International conflict management, mediation and political conflict.
