Teaching Mediation Around the World: Integrating Theory and Practice to Improve Conflict Management Skills Across Contexts - A Two-Part Workshop

Mediation theory and practice provide important insights for understanding and managing conflict. Previous research on peer mediation (i.e., Jones, 2004) and more recent research examining possible linkages between mediation skills and well-being (Malizia & Jameson, 2018) suggest that there are a variety of additional benefits to mediation training and practice, such as improved self-esteem, enhanced empathy and openness to perspectives, and overall improved emotional well-being. This workshop is proposed in two separate sessions: An Introduction to Mediation in Action is geared toward newcomers to mediation or those with less experience integrating mediation into their conflict courses. This session will include a mediation demonstration, invite participants to unpack what they see, and conclude with a panelist roundtable for a question and answer session. Session Two, Advanced Mediation Concepts and Teaching Activities, is for attendees with more mediation background. The panelists will discuss their approach to mediation training and practice, followed by facilitation of a mediation activity participants can immediately take back to their own institutions. The combination of workshops will integrate mediation theory and practice from experienced mediators and mediation instructors from countries including France, Israel, the UK, and the US.
