Somaliland: Clan identities and drivers of conflict
The Republic of Somaliland has a reputation as a relatively peaceful, stable and secure region. This region has one of the most ethnically homogeneous population in Africa in terms of culture, religion and language. Besides these similarities they have been historically divided by lines of descendants and clans’ animosities are one of the main threats to peace and stability. This study aims to better understand the role of clan identity in the development of conflicts between clans, by exploring the historical political and economic marginalization of clans based on clan affiliation and its impact on the relationship between Harti and Isaaq clans.
